This inner-ring suburb directly borders Milwaukee, offering a convenient way of life for its many residents. Living in Wauwatosa, WI

Wauwatosa's first settlement was established in 1935 by Charles Hart. Hart built gristmills and sawmills on the west side of the Menomonee River, which flows through modern-day Wauwatosa's core. As the area around the river began to industrialize, civic amenities were put into place. The area's first public school building was erected in 1841 and the Little Red Store - which still stands today - was built in 1854. However, prior to 1842 Wauwatosa was part of the Milwaukee township. In 1892, Wauwatosa was finally incorporated as a village. Mid-century suburbanization rewrote the city's description, changing it from a small town on the fringes of Milwaukee to a desirable and booming suburb.

One of Wauwatosa's largest claims to fame is its bustling and historic downtown. Now that Wauwatosa is officially a city, residents refer to its downtown as "The Village." More than 136 local stores dot the downtown streetscape, and a pedestrian-friendly layout recalls memories of times gone by. The Menomonee River and Hart Park are also located near the village center, bringing natural beauty to this otherwise semi-urban city.

Wauwatosa Attractions and Special Events

Because it directly borders Milwaukee, Wauwatosa boasts a variety of large-scale attractions within a few miles of its city center. The Milwaukee County Zoological Gardens and Milwaukee Irish Fest Center are located just a stone's throw from Wauwatosa. Within the city itself, numerous community events draw large regional crowds. From farmers markets to chamber orchestra performances, downtown Wauwatosa has something to offer everyone.
