West Allis apartments for rent put residents in the southeastern area of Wisconsin in Milwaukee County and just miles outside of the Milwaukee city metropolitan area. The city's name comes from Edward P. Allis, who owned a manufacturing plant to the east. The area where West Allis is today was located west of Allis' plant, and so the name came to be.
People come here for more reasons than just being close to Milwaukee. The business district is thriving and the population continues to grow. West Allis was even named runner-up as a Best Place to Raise Your Kids in 2010 by Business Week Magazine.
West Allis' history began when Wisconsin was still a territory, the nearby Milwaukee was not yet the giant city it is today and most of the surrounding land was teeming with forests and natural beauty and wildlife. Over the course of the 19th and early 20th centuries, as Milwaukee grew, so did West Allis. West Allis was officially chartered as a city in 1906 and was originally made up of 2,306 people who lived across the 2,400 acres of land.
Today, West Allis has grown to a population of more than 60,700 people, according to the U.S. Census Bureau in 2011. West Allis apartments can now be found across the 11.39 square miles of land encompassed by the city.
West Allis apartments are an excellent option for business professionals. The U.S. Census Bureau revealed that manufacturing and educational services, healthcare and social assistance are the top two industries in the area, making up a combined 27 percent of West Allis industries.
According to City-Data, the most common occupation in West Allis is metal and plastic workers, followed by other production occupations and supervisors.
While there are few options for higher education opportunities within the city borders of West Allis, the Milwaukee metropolitan area is less than five miles from West Allis. This puts the wide range of higher education facilities at the disposal of students living in West Allis. Notable nearby schools include the University of Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Area Technical College and Marquette University.
According to information gathered by the U.S. Census Bureau, West Allis rentals have a vacancy rate of 5.2 percent, and, as of 2010, the median rent was $718. The highest number of total renters, 44.4 percent, falls in the gross rent range of $500 to $749. Roughly 85.5 percent of total renters fall in the wider range of $500 to $1,499. More than one-third of all renters report spending 35 percent or more of their household income on gross rental costs.
Information from City-Data revealed that in March 2012 the cost of living in West Allis was assigned a value of 100.3, which is very near the national average of 100.
One of the popular area attractions within reach of those living in West Allis apartments is Greenfield Park. This park is part of the Milwaukee County Park system and encompasses more than 282 acres. Greenfield Park also includes an 18-hole golf course, the Cool Waters water park, areas for recreation and picnicking with friends and family, and a portion of the Oak Leaf Trail.
The Wisconsin State Fair & Expo Center is another popular area attraction, and the annual Wisconsin State Fair takes place in both West Allis and Milwaukee in August. The Expo Center hosts year-round events, meetings and other activities. The fairgrounds also encompass the Tommy G. Thompson Youth Center, the Milwaukee Mile Speedway, the Products Pavilion and a number of other facilities.
