A loft apartment is one with no walls, except in the bathroom, that’s large and spacious. Loft apartments often have large windows that let in lots of natural light and high ceilings.
1. Loft apartments are usually in old buildings
Most buildings with loft apartments are converted from old factories into living spaces. You’ll often see industrial-style features, such as exposed beams and pipes on the ceiling and natural brick walls.
2. Utilities are more expensive in loft apartments
Loft apartments are big and open, so you need to pay for the heating and air conditioning that goes along with such a large apartment. On top of that, the big windows and old brick walls aren’t great insulators, so you’ll probably be running the heat or air conditioner more often than not.
3. Loft apartments don’t have rooms separated by walls
A loft apartment is like a giant studio apartment, so there’s only one room. If you want separate living areas, you’ll have to create “walls” yourself by using room dividers, curtains, bookshelves, etc.
Is a loft apartment right for you?
Loft apartments aren’t for everyone, especially if you’re sharing with a roommate, and they can be hard to come by. If you’re lucky enough to come across one that’s open, take a look at your living situation to decide if a loft apartment is right for you.
