Handy Bathroom Maintenance Tips

Let’s face it: Bathroom maintenance isn’t exactly the most glamorous aspect of apartment living. In fact, it can be downright disgusting. If you and your roommate have ever had a bathroom-related disaster, you will know exactly what we mean. Overflowing toilets, clogged drains, dirty bath mats and sluggish plumbing can create a lot of headaches and messes for apartment dwellers.

Although your landlord is responsible for major repairs, keeping your bathroom clean and maintained can go a long way to avoid annoying plumbing problems and could help you get your security deposit back more easily if you decide to relocate. Here are some great bathroom maintenance and cleaning tips:

Clean Your Toilet on a Regular Basis

We understand that this isn’t exactly the most pleasant of household chores, but your toilet sees a lot of action on a day-to-day basis, so it should be properly cleaned. Although disinfecting the toilet bowl should be a no-brainer, cleaning the base of your toilet is important too, as it can collect germs and bacteria.

Don’t Overlook the Floors

If you think about it, your dry feet and shoes drag in dirt in from the great outdoors, and your wet feet track moisture onto the floor after a shower, so it makes sense that many bathroom floors can be surprisingly cringe-worthy. Since this is a high-traffic area, it’s best to sweep and mop your bathroom floor at least once a week, and maybe even more if you have kids or pets.

Mirrors and Cabinets Need Attention Too

Toothpaste splatter, hair products, and daily opening and closing can foster a lot of germs and bacteria on your bathroom cabinets and mirrors. Make sure to keep an all-purpose cleaner under the sink for the occasional wipe-down.

Invest in Antibacterial Wipes for the Sink

Makeup, dirty hands, hair and a variety of clog-exacerbating items make their way into the sink every day. Not only do antibacterial wipes keep these items out of your drains–they are great to have in a pinch when you have unexpected guests. It only takes about a minute to thoroughly clean your sink with these handy wipes.

Got Rust?

One of the most annoying aspects of bathroom maintenance is the collection of rust that inevitably happens. So many toiletries leave an unexpected rust ring–however, a quick spritz of WD-40 or even lighter fluid will take the rust right off. Worried about harmful chemicals? Pour salt on half of a lemon and rub it on the stain for green cleaning.

Clogs: A Common Problem

Most people who have lived in an apartment have dealt with clogs at least once. Instead of running to the store to get a pricey product to unclog your drain, just open your kitchen cabinet! Mix 1 cup of baking soda with 1 cup of salt and ¼ cup of cream of tartar. Keep this mixture in an airtight container and pour about ½ cup of this substance down the drain every few weeks, followed by a quart of boiling water. This is an easy, green way to keep your drains clog-free!
