Beware of Hidden Moving Costs

You’ve found a beautiful apartment that’s in the perfect neighborhood. That’s awesome! Before you sign the lease and put down your security deposit, you should make sure you have enough money for your move. There are a lot of costs involved with picking up and settling down in a new place, including some you may not have considered. Look at all the angles to be sure you know what your moving costs will include.

Hidden Moving Cost: Time

Moving to a new apartment takes time and you know the cliche: Time is money. You’ll be organizing your belongings, packing, driving, unpacking and decorating, all of which eats into your daily schedule. Start planning for your move early so that you aren’t panicking to get everything done at the last minute.

Hidden Moving Cost: Furnishing

Getting a bigger apartment is great. You can have more guests over and will have more space to do your thing, but you’ll also have to fill the rooms. Don’t forget that you’ll have to purchase more furniture and decor. If this is your first apartment, there will be a lot of things for you to buy. You’ll need all your kitchen utensils, cleaning supplies, bathroom furnishings and more. These items are easy to overlook when you’re focused on making your bedroom or living room a great space. Before you start packing, make a list of every room in your apartment and the items that are needed. Cross off objects as you get them. Coffee pot, check. Alarm clock, check.

Hidden Moving Cost: Vehicle Costs

Skipping the movers certainly saves money, but using your own vehicle comes with costs too. Some towns have a charge for parking on the street. If you don’t have a parking space at your new apartment, you’ll need to use street parking for a while. Gas is another huge moving expense. Your vehicle will be laden with boxes. That weight makes the car burn more gas. Complications on the road can also cost you money. If your tire pops or something else breaks, you’ll have to fix the problem. Have some money set aside for traveling costs.

Hidden Moving Cost: Utilities

Did you set up your Internet yet? Utilities add up quickly. You may have a one-time installation fee for your cable or have to pay a security deposit for your Internet service provider. If possible, try to transfer your current service to save on fees.
