Living an environmentally-friendly lifestyle – or “going green” – is becoming increasingly more popular. From electric cars to solar energy, minimalist lifestyles, avid recycling and growing your own produce, it seems we’re making a conscious effort to look at our environmental footprint and make a positive change to benefit the planet.

If you’re looking to go green, a great place to start is in your own apartment. Small actions can have a big impact. Here are four easy ways to make your apartment more environmentally friendly.

Cut down on energy in your home

Cutting your energy use in your home can benefit both the environment and your wallet. A few simple switches can lead you to a more sustainable lifestyle in no time. To reduce your energy output, you should:

  • Turn off the lights when you leave a room
  • Run the dishwasher or the washing machine only with a full load
  • Hang dry your clothes as much as possible
  • Switch to energy efficient light bulbs

These are only a few of the easy ways you can live a greener lifestyle at home. If you pay attention to where you’re expending energy, you can definitely think of more ways to cut down on the amount used.

Separate your garbage, recycling and compost

Recycling and composting are both beneficial for the environment, and it only takes a few minutes to do. Instead of automatically throwing everything in the garbage, set up a recycling bin and small compost bin and sort your disposables accordingly.

The city or town you live in will be able to provide information on what can be recycled. Tape this information on your fridge for easy reference.

Use green cleaning products

Environmentally-friendly cleaning products will help to reduce the number of chemicals you’re putting into the environment. They’re also safer for pets and children since they’re made from natural ingredients.

Green products get your home just as clean as their chemical counterparts, and in some cases, they’re even better!

Reuse what you can

One look at Pinterest and you’ll find thousands of ways to reuse common household products. Jars can be rinsed out and used for storage, gift bags can be folded up and saved for the next occasion and shopping bags can be reused repeatedly.

Before you throw something out take a second to think if you could use this the item for another purpose. You’d be surprised what you can come up with!
