“I’m so excited to do three loads of laundry today!” … said nobody ever. Laundry day might not be something you get psyched about, but it still has to get done if you’d like to wear clean clothes.

[Cutting Laundry Costs]

The good news is, this chore doesn’t have to take up your entire day. In fact, laundry day can be fairly stress free with these simple tips and tricks:

Pre-Sort Your Laundry

Instead of designating just one hamper for your dirty clothes, consider organizing your less-than-clean garments into two different bins: lights and darks. When you’re tossing your clothes in at the end of the day, put the light and dark garments in the appropriate containers.

This way, when laundry day comes, you don’t have to worry about spending an extra 10 minutes sorting through your whites and colors. All you have to do is toss everything in.

Designate a Laundry Day

Choose a day of the week to do your laundry, and stick to that schedule. Once you get in the swing of things, laundry will become second nature to you. This can also help you better plan out your weeks. If you know that you need an hour to do laundry on Tuesdays, you won’t schedule your workout for that time either.

Folding your laundry doesn’t have to be boring. Put a small TV or a stereo in your laundry room. This way, you can jam out to your favorite tunes or catch up on the latest TV shows while you fold your whites and colors. Need to catch up with a friend? Just put your phone on speaker while you pull garments out of the dryer.

Dry Your Delicates First

After drying one load of laundry, the temperature inside your dryer is quite hot. This is why you should throw your delicates in first—they’re less likely to shrink in a cold dryer. Follow that up with heavier loads of clothes.

Set Out Jars for Pocket Change

If I had a dollar for every time I washed something that was in my pockets, I’d be rich. Set out jars designated to hold everything that you find in the pockets of your clothes. When you see the jars, you’ll be reminded that you need to check the pockets before throwing clothes into the washer and dryer.

[5 Reasons to Keep the Change]

This should save you a lot of stress and frustration, and prevent the items in your pockets from getting destroyed.

Put Up Signs

If you found a stain on your clothing but can’t quite remember the proper way mom taught you to get it out, write up directions. Have step-by-step directions on how to remove stains or how to prevent garments from shrinking. This way, you won’t have to call up mom panicked and can have a stress-free laundry day.
