Moving Without a Car

Whether you’re off to college, relocating for work or just looking for a new adventure in a new city, moving without a car can be a challenge. is here to help.

Rent a Moving Truck

If you’re moving without a car, consider renting a moving truck. This way, you can use the truck to help you move and return it once you’re done. To get the best deal out of your moving truck, make sure you do a little research beforehand. Estimate the size of what you’re looking to haul out. The last thing you want to do is rent a truck that’s too small so you end up having to take numerous unnecessary trips. Many truck rental companies will help you decide what size truck you need based on the number of items you’re moving or the number of rooms your belongings will fit into.

It’s also a good idea to plan ahead and book the truck early. Summer is a popular time to move, so truck rentals may be more expensive during that time of the year. They may also be harder to book. The last day of the month can be particularly busy as well. Give yourself plenty of time by ordering your rental truck at least a couple of weeks in advance.

Before you take your rental truck out on the road, be sure you’re insured. When you rent a car with a credit card, your card issuer often provides rental car insurance, but this isn’t the case with a moving truck. Check with your insurance company to see if you need supplemental coverage or if your auto policy will provide insurance.

Hire Movers

Another option to consider is hiring movers. If you have a lot of belongings you’re looking to move to your new place, getting professional help could be a great option. After all, moving can be a strenuous process. Before you hire anyone, get recommendations from friends, co-workers and local real estate agents. Don’t automatically assume that the big name companies are the best. You should end up with at least three or four companies to call for an in-home estimate. This will put a guaranteed cap on what you will pay for your move. Estimates for interstate moves often depend on the weight of the items you’re moving and the distance you’re traveling.
