Schedule a Smooth Move in Three Simple Steps

By FlatRate Moving

There are many things to consider when scheduling the big move to your new apartment. Follow these three steps to maximize your time and ensure you’re planning a smooth move.

Step 1: Start with a Budget

Budgeting for your move is probably the most important thing you can do after signing your lease. Take into account whether you’d like to hire help for packing and moving. Consider if you’d need to rent storage space, and plan for miscellaneous costs like purchasing enough boxes and packing tape.

Expert tip: When scheduling your move keep in mind that weekend rates are higher as well as popular paydays like the 1st and the 15th of the month. Schedule your move sometime in September through mid-May to avoid peak moving season—this way you’ll get the best deal.

Step 2: Select the Best Time of Day and Day of Week for Your Move

For a smooth move, pick the time of day that works best for you. When choosing a time of day and day of week, consider factors like rush hour traffic and other things like whether your apartment is in close proximity to a school bus stop—no one wants to be stuck behind a stop-and-go bus that is picking up or dropping off kids.

Also, if your new apartment is situated near a restaurant, find out what day of the week and time of day they receive deliveries. This will ensure you’re not unloading your truck while they’re unloading theirs.

Step 3: Call Your Friends … in Advance

If your friends are the kind of people who always have “plans” on moving day, make sure you consider their schedules before you call on them for help.

You may need to ask a friend or family member to babysit the kids while you oversee the movers, or you may need a helping hand while packing or on move day. Make sure you let your friends know in advance what you’d need their help with and the time commitment.

Some moves may take a bit more effort, but following these three steps should allow for a more smooth process.
