Halloween is here and that means witches, goblins, vampires and gremlins will soon be taking over your television screens. While there’s always a debate on the best kind of candy or costume, there’s no question that a Halloween movie is the perfect way to get you in the Halloween spirit.

Luckily, Netflix has a great selection of Halloween-inspired movies, from spooky to funny and family-friendly. Here’s a list of 10 great movies to watch on Netflix this October.

1. Halloween

What is more obvious to get you in the Halloween spirit than the movie, Halloween. In the original film in the series, villain Michael Myers escaped a mental hospital 15 years after he killed his sister and he’s back to strike again.

This movie is full of blood, guts and gore, so don’t watch it if you have a weak stomach.

2. Scream

A true ’90s classic full of iconic scenes starring Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette. This movie is a horror flick with a bit of comedy thrown in due to the cheese factor. If you’re looking for a serial killer slasher movie that will have you jumping out of your seat, tune in to Scream.

Fun fact: Courtney and David met on the set of Scream, and their romance blossomed from there.

3. Cult of Chucky

In the latest release of this horror throw back, the beloved doll Chucky is back to his old ways and terrorizing a new victim. If spooky dolls that are alive and have weapons creeps you out, then the Cult of Chucky would be a great one for you.

4. The Sixth Sense

This movie follows Cole Sears, a young boy who has a dark secret — he can see the dead. If you haven’t seen this M. Night Shyamalan movie and have been somehow fortunate enough to hear nothing about it over the past two decades, then you’re in for a real treat. But even if you haven’t been living under a rock and are all too familiar with “I see dead people,” this one is still worth a rewatch.

5. The Shining

A cult classic, this psychological thriller based on Stephen King’s novel is set at a haunted hotel where the supernatural residents terrorize a visiting writer and his family. You may never want to visit a hotel again after this one.

6. The Conjuring

What would Halloween be without a ghost story based on true events? In this film, the Perron family recently moved into a farmhouse only to be met with a disturbing and dangerous supernatural presence.

This movie has everything you want in a spooky ghost story that will have you sleeping with the lights on.

7. The Addams Family

If horror movies aren’t your cup of tea, you can still get into the Halloween spirit with The Addams Family. Packed full of laughs, this family-friendly movie showcases a con artist posing as the Addams family’s long-lost uncle to try to steal the family fortune from this “creepy and kooky” family.

8. The Corpse Bride

In this Tim Burton film, characters Victor and Victoria are being set up for an arranged marriage. One night before their marriage Victor flees and finds himself unknowingly marrying The Corpse Bride.

With a dark setting, incredible characters and a touching story, this quirky and romantic film is a hit with all ages.

9. Scooby-Doo: The Movie

All your favorite characters from the mystery gang are on patrol to solve a mystery on a haunted island and save the world from creatures that are trying to take over. If you’re looking for a cheesy, feel-good movie that will make you feel like a kid again, this is the one for you.

10. Casper

Keeping with the family-friendly train, Casper is another ’90s classic. In this cute film, a doctor who specializes in ghosts is hired to rid a mansion of spirits, but his daughter befriends a friendly ghost named – you guessed it – Casper.

If you grew up in the ’90s and are looking for a throwback, pop on Casper and enjoy.

There’s no shortage of fantastic movies to watch on Netflix this October to heighten your Halloween spirits. Whether you’re in the mood to be scared out of your whits or simply want a funny or feel-good film with some witches, goblins, gremlins or spooky creatures, you can find something that works for you.
