Living with Fido or Fluffy in your pet-friendly apartment gives you a companion to come home to at the end of every day, and a great cuddle partner. But the hair that comes from your canine and feline friends doesn’t look as good on your furniture as it does on them.
Claws also tend to leave unwanted marks and scratches on couches and chairs, and the occasional accident can leave your furniture looking less than new.
Before purchasing furniture for your apartment, consider these pet-friendly tips:
Choose the Right Fabric
Fabric makes all the difference when picking out pet-friendly furniture. A microfiber couch would be perfect for your furry friend because it is extremely stain-resistant. If Fido tracks in dirt from outside and hops up on the microfiber couch, you won’t have to worry about your sofa permanently soaking up those stains. All you have to do is wipe down your microfiber furniture with a damp cloth and a few drops of detergent. It’s also very easy to remove fur from microfiber by rubbing the fabric with a plastic glove.
Another good fabric for your apartment’s couch is leather. It’s stain-resistant, fur and muddy footprints can be easily wiped clean with a damp cloth, and even sharp claws won’t easily puncture the leather.
Match Fur Color with Fabric
Your black Labrador’s hair will likely stick out like a sore thumb on your white couch. Conversely, a white pup wouldn’t be well suited for a dark-hued sofa. As a general rule, stay away from dark-colored furniture if your pet has light hair and vice versa.
Opt for Durable Furniture
Pets can certainly get rowdy every once in awhile, and this doesn’t bode well for any fragile furniture. Instead, pick durable pieces that are likely to stay upright even when bumped. Choose couches and coffee tables that are free of any sharp edges to protect your furry friend. Instead, look for pieces with round edges.
