5 Ways to Hide an Ugly Air Conditioner Unit

If you’re one of the many who live without central air conditioning, you probably have some other type of unit you use to cool off.

A window unit, while functional, can be a huge eyesore that steals the attention away from your beautiful decor. But what can be done? A lot, actually. Window AC unit decorating is a thing, and here are a few ways you can do it, too.

1. Stylish vent cover

If you’re really struggling to be creative with your AC unit decor, one of the most common ways to dress it up is a simple vent cover. There are plenty of fun options to buy or you can turn it into a weekend project and make your own so it fits your style.

You can easily up-cycle things like old shutters by painting and mounting them to the wall around the unit. Not only are you decorating, but you’re saving perfectly good materials from going to waste.

2. Turn it into a work of art

There are enough flat surfaces on a window AC unit that you can attach paper, fabric or fun objects to it. A fun way to do this is to humanize your AC unit by turning it into a funny face.

Add a couple of large googly eyes, give it a smile and you’ve got a friendly new face. You can even use flexible ducts (from the hardware store) to add arms and make your unit into a robot. Get creative and have fun with it!

3. Curtains

Put up some curtains to cover your window AC. It’s easy to open them up when the unit is in use then close them when you’re done. If you need to stay within a budget, you can easily make curtains yourself for cheap.

You can add vintage character to a room by using cafe curtains. They’ll only cover the part of the window that contains the AC unit and give the room a breezy modern-vintage vibe. You’ll cover up the window unit without sacrificing all of the natural light — it’s a win-win!

4. Add some sparkle

Glam up your unit with some streamers. When your air conditioner isn’t running, the streamers will hang and cover the bland vents. When you need to turn it on to cool your home, it will blow the streamers and give you something fun to look at!

5. Plant shelf

Seeing as it’s a window unit, it’s obviously in a window and probably near sunlight. It takes up the perfect spot for plants to grow. Mount a shelf around your unit and put a few potted plants on it. Whether you want a colorful flower to brighten the room or a few fresh herbs for cooking, you can plant a little garden that will thrive on top of your AC unit.
