Buckhead remains Atlanta’s luxury district, with Lenox Mall and Phipps Plaza offering retail from big brands. You can also find the headquarters of several startups and Fortune 500 companies here, all connected through MARTA, the city’s rail system. You’ll find large mansions in the area, as well as smaller parks and playgrounds in tree-lined streets.

Midtown

One of the city’s most walkable neighborhoods, Midtown is the right mix of residential and commercial real estate. Enjoy a walk around Piedmont Park, ride your bike down its many bike lanes and visit Cafe Intermezzo for a tasty bite to eat. Within its numbered streets, you can both find small markets and thriving nightlife. It’s also the arts district of Atlanta — with the High Museum of Art, Woodruff Arts Center, Fox Theatre, SCAD’s 14th Street Playhouse and the MODA located a couple of blocks from each other.

Being in the center of the action will cost you. The average one-bedroom apartment in Midtown will cost you about $2,200 each month.

Downtown

Downtown has all the tourist traps you love, but if you look beyond that, you’ll find some gems in Castleberry Hill. The downtown neighborhood is packed full of art galleries, loft apartments and streets lined with murals from local artists. Once a month, the neighborhood hosts an art stroll to visit all the galleries’ latest shows. Grab a pint afterward at Elliott’s Street Pub, or if you’re in the mood for tacos, stop by No Más Cantina.

Little Five Points

Old Fourth Ward

West End

First, make a stop at Murphy’s for a stellar selection of wine, then cross the street for your dinner ingredients at Tuscany at Your Table, followed by gelato to go from Paolo’s.

Virginia-Highland is one of the most expensive neighborhoods for renters in Atlanta. A one-bedroom apartment here averages about $2,500 a month.

Decatur

Just a few miles and MARTA stops east of Atlanta, Decatur is the ultimate place for young families — good schools, a beautiful square full of small restaurants and businesses and bike lanes for safe riding. The city hosts several festivals throughout the year, including the Decatur Book Festival, where people from around the country see their favorite authors.

Living in downtown Decatur will cost you, but there are plenty of affordable options outside of the Square. The average one-bedroom apartment in this city runs about $1,500 a month.
