Located northeast of Sacramento, Antelope is a town that embodies the best relaxed aspects of living in Northern California. In the 1800s, Antelope was part of the Center Township region and had the highest population in the area with 400 people. A small settlement located on the Central Pacific Railroad, the town was regularly surveyed in 1878. J.F. Cross built the first large brick warehouse in Antelope that led to the creation of the Antelope Business Association. Two blacksmiths shops, two stores and four houses were built soon after, followed by a post office. Antelope became the shipping point for sending large quantities of grain to Sacramento and other towns in the mountains. Today, Antelope is a census-designated, unincorporated town in the northern Sacramento suburbs. There are more than 10 parks in the city, creating a beautiful landscape in a town of less than 7 square miles.
Although there are no traditional college opportunities in Antelope, there are a number of universities located 15 miles away in the Sacramento area. Local residents attend classes at Sacramento City College, California State University at Sacramento, the University of California at Davis, American River College, Cosumnes River College and the Art Institute of California at Sacramento, among others.
For those seeking work, there are many opportunities located in Antelope and throughout Sacramento County. Many residents work for the State of California and in the Sacramento County offices to support the city's booming infrastructure. Healthcare is another giant here, with the UC Davis Health System, Kaiser Permanente, Dignity Health and Sutter Health Sacramento Sierra Region offering thousands of jobs to local workers. The Intel Corporation has a large presence here, employing computer-minded individuals to help design and build essential technologies. Local residents also place a very high importance on childhood education, with the San Juan School District, Sacramento City School District and Elk Grove School District all being top employers in the area.
With all of the attractive aspects of the Northern California lifestyle, residents pay high prices for Antelope apartments. United States Census Bureau statistics show that people should expect to pay an average of $1,351 a month, which is $180 more than the California state average. Despite the expensive cost of rent, everyday living expenses are very affordable in Antelope. Antelope is home to the Antelope Greens Golf Course, the only demanding executive course in the Sacramento area. The course has a par of 58, offering a true challenge for experienced golfers while still allowing new players to have a fun game.
Sacramento County features some of the finest attractions in Northern California. The Sacramento County Fair features more than 30 carnival rides, a junior livestock auction, invitational bull riding, equestrian events and student art exhibitions, among others. This family event is a favorite of Antelope residents with something to offer people of all ages. The Winter Wine & Food Fest is another local favorite, with more than 60 wineries, microbreweries and restaurants coming together to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Sacramento and Northeastern California.
