Located on the southern coast of California, Downey is known for unique features beyond its beaches. In addition to its approximately 112,000 residents, Downy is home of several of the Apollo modules and spacecrafts. Named among the top 25 percent of "100 Best Cities to Do Business in California" by California Business Magazine, Downey is known for quality living - with schools, neighborhoods and hospitals recognized for excellence, residents are provided with exclusive lifestyles.
Downey streets are lined with gorgeous, tall green palm trees, which is why Downey apartments for rent are excellent choices for anyone looking to settle down in California.
Downey was named after John Gately Downey, an Irish immigrant who originally came to the area during the California Gold Rush. Downey eventually became the seventh governor of California.
Downey began its first major period of growth following the Civil War, when many southerners traveled to the area in search of new opportunities. By 1873, the "Tract of the Downy Land Association" had been developed. As more residents continued to flock to the region, much of Downey's layout was determined by the railroad, with 10 acres of the 1873 tract map being designated for the railroad. By the turn of the century, Downey had solidified its spot as a commercial district and business hub.
Today, Downey continues to be a strong presence in southern California business and trade.
Residents living in Downey not only get to experience one-of-a-kind living, but they can gain a cultural lifestyle while doing so. The community spaces include the 750-seat Downey theater, the Downey History Center, the Wilderness Park Nature Museum and the Downey Art Museum. The city has 100 acres of land designated for its 11 community parks, as well as a number of golf courses for enthusiasts and recreational purposes, providing all residents with plenty of spaces to play and enjoy the natural world.
