The San Bernardino County community of Highland lies in the south-central region of the state. Bordered by the majestic San Bernardino and San Gabriel Mountains means apartment renters are afforded a beautiful view and numerous opportunities for outdoor activities. The extensive network of trails connects with the Santa Ana River Trail. Development is underway to extend the paths from the nearby mountain ranges to the coast of Orange County. The town is also a mere 45-minute drive to the city of Palm Springs. When choosing an apartment for rent in a local neighborhood, you will find many advantages to living here.
Centuries before the Spanish explored the area in 1772, the Serrano Native Americans made the region home. The town developed gradually over time with the merging of different settlements established by Henry Rabel and his sons during the middle of the 1800s. The pioneer discovered a large pond that received water from natural artesian and thermal sources. He built bath houses and a hotel where visitors stayed and benefited from the healing, soothing mineral waters. He gradually expanded the property, adding more bath houses, an entertainment hall and swimming pool. Citrus fruit farming and lumber became prominent industries. The town was officially founded in 1891. Currently, the community boasts more than 53,000 residents.
While the city has a variety of green spaces within its borders, many prefer more rustic surroundings. Leave your neighborhood for the weekend and head for the San Bernardino Mountains. The region also features the San Bernardino National Forest that spans nearly 680,000 acres and provides the perfect environment for camping, hiking and horseback riding along miles of trails. There are numerous designated picnic areas in addition to an arboretum and shooting range.
If you're not afraid to challenge your luck, you might venture from the neighborhood to the local San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino. The facility features more than 3,400 slot machines, blackjack and other game tables, poker areas and a 2,500 seat bingo hall. Take a chance and perhaps win part or all of your rent for a month. The expansive venue also contains a food court, sports grill and formal dining area. Live entertainment spaces present boxing events, comedy nights and celebrity guest performers.
Meet other apartment renters and members of the Highland community in the spring while enjoying the annual Citrus Harvest Festival. Activities include volunteers dressed in period costume who provide demonstrations of historic events. A stage serves as the platform for live entertainment. The Kiwanis host a car show and the historic district offers a tour of various homes. There are a number of scheduled, friendly competitions and shopping opportunities.
State highway 30 runs through Highland and Interstate-215 lies just to the west. While many arrive, rent an apartment, work or go to school locally while driving a personal vehicle, Highland has different transportation options. Public bus and taxi services operate within the community and to other locations. Private limo and shuttle services are also available. The Amtrak station lies a mere 30-minute drive away.
Highland places an importance on education and has two award-winning school districts. For higher education, many apartment renters live in the area for the chance to attend a nearby college. San Bernardino Valley College lies less than three miles from the town. The facility offers certificate and two-year programs in everything from accounting to welding. The University of Redlands is also just minutes away and offers certificate, undergraduate and graduate programs. Loma Linda University is another viable option.
Government organizations, consumer service and health care facilities comprise the top employers. San Bernardino County, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and the DaVita facility employ the most people.
