Originally referred to as South San Diego Beach, the area developed by Morrison included land that has since been annexed by San Diego. Other developers purchased nearby plots of land and constructed neighborhoods and subdivisions. The city's first sidewalks, general store and library were put into place during the 1900s and 1910s. Throughout the city's history, a strong military presence came into play. By 1918, North Island became a permanent air station. In present day, the city is home to the U.S. Navy's Naval Outlying Landing Field Imperial Beach, also known as NOLF Imperial Beach.
