Downtown—first known as “New Town”—became the center of San Diego in the 1870s. Some of the Victorian homes here were built in that period. Up until the 1990s, that part of the city was mostly warehouses and vacant lots. Now it’s busy with artists and trendy shops.

Nearby, large Horton Plaza handles many local residents’ retail needs. You can head to Little Italy for Italian food and South Park for craft beers. North Park is also an interesting area if you want to investigate independent stores or eat in eclectic restaurants.
Balboa Park was set aside for public recreation in 1835, making it one of the country’s oldest spaces dedicated to community enjoyment. That’s where you’ll find the San Diego Zoo and many of San Diego’s museums. Chicano Park’s murals enliven Barrio Logan. There are other pocket parks around as well. Area beaches aren’t too far off, either.
Your rental options in Central San Diego include high-rise condos, classic Victorians, modern apartments, bungalows, and more.
