Since the beginning of the 1990s, the former warehouse district now known as the East Village has been transformed into a popular work-live-play neighborhood that draws residents from surrounding areas. As a result, the 130-block East Village is one of San Diego’s largest and fastest growing communities. The Harbor Drive Pedestrian Bridge, which transits the community, links Balboa Park and the San Diego Bay shoreline.
In addition to numerous pet friendly apartments, the neighborhood has pet shops and a veterinary clinic catering to the needs of all types of companion animals. On- and off-leash dog parks are available in surrounding communities. These parks, such as Nate’s Point on the west mesa of Balboa Park, feature scenic views, water fountains and open exercise space.
Located to the east of the Gaslamp Quarter and southeast of Cortez Hill and the Core district, East Village is an easy 10-minute, surface street commute downtown. The Park and Market Street Trolley Station serves the Blue and Orange light rail lines. There are also several municipal bus routes through the community. Ranked as one of San Diego’s top ten most walkable neighborhoods, residents of an East Village apartment do not need a car to run various daily errands. The community is also in close proximity to Interstate 5, which provides quick access to San Diego International Airport and travel throughout Southern California.
Schools in the community include Sherman Elementary and the King-Chavez Preparatory Academy as well as Garfield and San Diego High Schools. The student to teacher ratio in East Village is slightly better than the rest of the county unified school district. San Diego City College, The Thomas Jefferson School of Law and the NewSchool of Architecture and Design are also located within the community. City College is home to the non-traditional San Diego Early/Middle College High School that enables students to receive college credit while earning their diploma.
