Between 1955 and 1965 is when much of the neighborhood history and development of Serra Mesa San Diego began. The city's leaders at the time had many disagreements about what to name the area, but after it was all said and done, Serra Mesa was born! The neighborhood population as of 2012 was about 23,900, meaning it’s still a relatively small community. Serra Mesa San Diego is certainly an ideal place to call home with it’s homey feel and close proximity to so many other amenities at the same time.

Transportation through this area should not be an issue as there are over four trolley's, more than two train stations, including one next to San Diego mission, a very popular tourist attraction with rich history of San Diego, and multiple options for biking and walking paths. Most people use cars in Southern California so the traffic is typically very congested, but it’s mostly an evil that you can’t avoid no matter what neighborhood you’re in. The trick is to live close to work and the activities that you participate in most.

Surrounding parks and recreation centers also cater to a pet friendly environment by allowing pets of a certain breed and size into the area.
This community has five elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. All of the schools are apart of the San Diego Unified School district. There is a Catholic Church parochial school and a Hebrew day school, in which both operate from K-8. Jones and Angier Elementary schools rank the highest among all the elementary schools. The average teacher to student ratio for each school in Serra Mesa is about 18:1. Students looking to pursuing a four-year university will need to look outside the community as the area only has one community college nearby.
