Living in Willimantic, CT

European settlers came to the area in the 1600s, and most of the first residents made their living farming wheat, rye, corn, barley and flax. Industries slowly began to grow in the area, because convenient local rivers and streams provided an ideal power source for sawmills and gristmills.

The town of Windham consists of North Windham, Windham Center, South Windham and Willimantic. These different sections developed at different paces throughout history. During the 1800s, Willimantic became the center of industry in the area, while Windham retained its rural past. During the middle of the century, railroads fueled the growth of the area, and trolleys frequently shuttled residents and travelers throughout the community.

Willimantic's golden age was the Victorian era, when many mansions were built in the community and hotels sprang up to accommodate a high number of travelers. Tourist attractions were constructed, and the community saw a huge influx of immigrants from Europe to work in the area's thriving milling industry. The frequent immigration caused Willimantic to develop into a culturally rich community.

Throughout much of the 1800s, Willimantic was considered a borough of Windham, but by 1893, it officially became a city. In the early 1980s, the city of Willimantic and town of Windham consolidated and became a single town under the name Windham. Today, Willimantic still retains its unique identity even though it is a part of Windham, and is home to more than 17,000 residents.

With flexible class schedules, online learning options and the chance to attend school part time, the college makes every attempt to make courses accessible to its students.

Willimantic isn't just an ideal place to attend school - it's also a place for residents to find work nearby. With the city of Hartford just a short drive away, a number of residents work within the Hartford metropolitan area. Some of the largest employers in the region include the state of Connecticut, United Technologies, Aetna, Hartford Hospital and Bank of America.

Willimantic Attractions and Special Events

Both Willimantic and Windham are full of local attractions for both residents and visitors to enjoy. The Windham Textile and History Museum features exhibits that teach visitors about the history of textiles and how trends, technology and innovation changed the industry and the region. Also in town is the Connecticut Eastern Railroad Museum, an institution that guides visitors through the fascinating history of the railroad in the area. Families will especially appreciate the kid-friendly exhibits, such as the 1850s replica pump car that youngsters can operate.

One of Willimantic's highly anticipated annual events is the Boom Box Parade. When no marching band could be found for the annual Memorial Day Parade in 1986, residents took matters into their own hands and created the Boom Box Parade, and groups marched while carrying their radios. This tradition continues today, and is a fun opportunity for residents to get involved with other locals.
