New Castle is a coastal colonial town that has maintained a historic charm for centuries. The city features cobblestone streets and historic sites along the riverfront, inviting residents and travelers to enjoy a refreshing, low-key experience. New Castle only has a little more than 5,300 residents, which creates a very warm, community-driven environment that is perfect for raising a family. Look for New Castle apartments for rent and take a step back in time.
New Castle was founded in 1651 by Peter Stuyvesant under the original name of Fort Casimir. Because of the city's accessible location, it fell under rule of the Netherlands, Sweden and Great Britain at different points in history. New Castle became the capital of Delaware after the counties were dissatisfied with the leadership of William Penn and granted a separate legislature. The city quickly became a thriving community because of its coastal location. New Castle was the eastern terminal of the New Castle and Frenchtown Railroad and served as a station where passengers would board boats to continue travel further south through Baltimore.
Today, New Castle is a charming colonial town that is still home to buildings dating back hundreds of years. The city is unique because it is a historic community where people live and work. All home renovations are strictly monitored to ensure that New Castle maintains the individuality of past and present owners.
New Castle is home to campuses of Wilmington University and Wesley College, which offer very different college experiences to local students. Wilmington University brings over 10,000 students to the area each year to take classes in a wide range of associates and bachelors degree programs, including early childhood education, behavioral science, game design and development, legal studies and sports management. Wesley College boasts a smaller atmosphere with approximately 350 total students in undergraduate and graduate programs. Wesley College offers a more personalized educational environment in the fields of liberal arts, business, nursing and education.
