Located in Florida's Miami-Dade County, Hialeah is the fifth largest city in the state. Those interested in Hialeah apartments for rent will likely appreciate the city's proximity to Miami and Fort Lauderdale, as well as easy access to several freeways - I-95, I-75, the Palmetto and Sawgrass Expressways and the Florida Turnpike.
Hialeah's name means "high prairie," which reflects its original purpose - the area's Native American residents used to dock their canoes in Hialeah to display their wares to Miami residents. It wasn't until the early 20th century that the area was developed. Missouri cattleman James Bright and aviation pioneer Glenn Curtis came to town in 1920 and were instrumental in raising funds for the construction of public buildings and facilities. In 1921, 13 miles of land were incorporated as a town.
Hialeah quickly blossomed. Silent films were made at the Miami Movie Studios, and the 220-acre Hialeah Park Race Track opened its doors in 1925, attracting more Miami media coverage than any other event prior to that time. The area sustained damage in the Great Hurricane of 1926, but was rebuilt quickly, with the new Hialeah Park Race Track opening in 1932.
Over the next decades, the city continued to prosper and its population grew at a rapid pace. In 1925, it was home to 1,500 residents. By 2010, this figure had skyrocketed to 224,669 people, and grew to an estimated 229,969 in 2011.
Hialeah is served by Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the fourth largest school district in the United States. The city has 18 elementary schools, four middle schools and two secondary public schools, as well as several private institutions. In terms of further education, the city is home to the University of Florida Dental School Annex and Miami Dade Community College's Hialeah Campus.
The fact that Miami is approximately half an hour away from Hialeah significantly broadens the educational opportunities available, as the city is home to a number of colleges and universities. These include the University of Miami, a private research institution with more than 15,000 students, and Florida International University (FIU), one of the 25 largest public universities in the United States. FIU is Miami's only four-year public research university and offers more than 180 bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs to a student body of nearly 50,000 people.
The public school district is one of the area's largest employers, along with the federal, state, county and city governments.
Hialeah registered a 110.9 on City-Data.com's March 2012 cost of living index - higher than the national average of 100, but lower than Miami's ranking of 115.2. The median gross rent of apartments in Hialeah is $933.
Located in the heart of northwest Dade, Hialeah is within easy reach of numerous cities and attractions. Miami Beach is just 10 minutes away, while a 15-minute drive will get you to Coral Gables, home of the University of Miami. Coconut Grove, South Beach and Downtown Fort Lauderdale are approximately half an hour away as well.
Hialeah features more than 100 acres of recreational facilities, including three tennis centers, five public swimming pools and 14 public parks.
Sports fans will likely be in their element here. In addition to the historic Hialeah Park Race Track, the Sun Life Stadium and Marlins Park - homes of the Miami Dolphins and Miami Marlins, respectively - are approximately 15 minutes away.
