Located in central Broward County, less than a mile west of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Lauderhill is a thriving community with close access to all the amenities. Spanning 8.6 square miles, Lauderhill has many social, recreational and educational activities, as well as several public schools, churches and libraries. The business community is very diverse, and residents of Lauderhill are consistently on the cusp of innovative efforts to improve the overall quality of life in the city. Lauderhill apartments for rent are close to all the opportunities available in Fort Lauderdale, including the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport. According to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, there was a huge spike in the population from 1990 to 2000 from 50,946 to 66,940. Since then, the population has remained fairly stable and is just more than 68,100 residents today.
In the early years of Lauderhill, its residents referred to it as Sunnydale. When houses first began popping up in the area, many were wary of moving to the dairy farm country that had many more cows than humans. In the city's early years, thousands of acres of land were dedicated to grazing cows that produced fresh milk for the region. Until recently, the evidence of the McArthur Dairy Farm was still apparent.
The area was a planned urban development, and in the late 1970s, the northwest section was developed as a single-family home community. The area was planned specifically before any buildings were built, each designed for a purpose. Lauderhill has also been on the forefront of commercial development as one of the first enclosed air-conditioned malls in the Southeast opened in 1966 next to the Dairy Farm. Lauderhill Mall was once the spot where people would trap alligators and other animals.
In Broward County, there is a diverse business community offering plenty of opportunities for employment. Most of the top employers in the county are located in Fort Lauderdale, including AutoNation, Republic Services, Spherion Corporation, Citrix Systems and Seacor Holdings.
