Miramar is the third largest city in Broward County in terms of size and the fifth largest in terms of population. The quaint community is about 14 miles long by 2.5 miles wide, and is consistently going through development. The city is family-friendly, located in an ideal area for corporate and business development. Since it is located less than 30 minutes from the Miami and Fort Lauderdale airports and seaports, there are plenty of resources for transportation.
Miramar apartments and rentals are likely near a park. In the city, there are 22 neighborhood parks, one regional park and 10 community parks with a variety of different sports and athletic courts. Over the past two decades, the population of Miramar has gone through an incredible increase. According to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of Miramar was 41,460 in July 1990, and today, more than 124,300 people live in the city.
The community of Miramar was created as a bedroom community for two nearby metropolises, Miami and Fort Lauderdale. In 1953, A.L. Mailman bought the property that is now known as Miramar. He purchased the land from H.D. Perry, who was recognized as one of the foremost pioneers of the city. Mailman built 56 homes on the property, and since they were inexpensive buildings made from concrete with flat roofs, they sold very quickly.
During this time, there were only a few roads that provided access to the community, including U.S. 441, Hallandale Beach Boulevard and Pembroke Road. Unlike many other emerging cities, Miramar's growth happened at a steady pace because of the careful planning of the city's founders. Today, there is still one-third of the land that has not been developed. Present administration has been trying to preserve the character of Miramar, while allowing for growth in the city.
As Miramar's location is ideal for business, there are plenty of opportunities within the city limits and in the surrounding cities for employment. For instance, some of the top employers in Broward County include Elizabeth Arden, Spirit Airlines, AutoNation, JM Family Enterprises, Republic Services, Spherion Corporation and Citrix Systems. With Fort Lauderdale nearby, there are diverse opportunities for residents to find their dream job.
Many apartments in Miramar are occupied with students attending one of the nearby colleges or universities. Miami Dade College is just 20 miles away from Miramar and offers more than 300 academic areas of study on eight campuses. Florida International University in Miami and Nova Southwest University in Fort Lauderdale are other four-year universities nearby.
The cost of living is fairly reasonable in Miramar. According to Best Places, the overall cost of living is 1 point higher than the national average, food is 6 points higher and utilities are 4 points lower. However, finding a rental in Miramar may be a little bit more expensive. According to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, the average cost of an apartment is $1,372. Since Miramar is so close to all the amenities of a metropolis, transportation and beaches, it is reflected in the cost of living.
Miramar's civic center hosts many yearly events, including the Halloween Masquerade Dance. At the Miramar Cultural Center and Artspark, there are plenty of activities and events, as well as a botanical garden and dance studio. This landmark is a vibrant, urban destination for residents and visitors with an 800-seat theater, two art galleries and a banquet facility. Also, there are plenty of restaurants and entertainment within walking distance to complete a night out on the town.
