Living in a Grant Park apartment brings you close to Atlanta’s wildlife as well as to some of its most respected citizenry. This neighborhood surrounds the large, shade-rich Grant Park, home to the Atlanta Zoo. Up along Memorial Drive, you’ll also discover engaging nightspots. That’s your wildlife covered on two fronts. As for honored citizens, this neighborhood is home Oakland Cemetery. That’s the final resting place of Gone With the Wind author Margret Mitchell and other lauded Atlantans. Grant Park is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods and it’s got strong community connections. The neighborhood is gentrifying, but you might still experience some occasional crime here.
The neighborhood of Grant Park is named for Lemuel P. Grant, a Georgia Railroad engineer known as the “Father of Atlanta.” Grant helped bring the railroad to the city. He built a mansion in what is now Grant Park back in 1858. In the 1890s, middle-class families built their distinctive homes here. A century later, Interstate 20 divided the neighborhood, continuing the auto’s detrimental effect on the area. In the current century, the neighborhood of Grant Park was protected as Atlanta’s largest Historic District.
Grant Park is active with home-style eateries and neighborhood watering holes. Up along Memorial Drive, you’ll find a row of restaurants, bars, and clubs. Many of these have rooftop patios, adding great views of the city to your order for free. It’s not a neighborhood that’s great for shopping, but you’re close to Downtown stores from here.
There’s quite a bit of green space in Grant Park, with the large, sedate Oakland Cemetery here and the eponymous park. Zoo Atlanta and the Atlanta Cyclorama aren’t Grant Park’s only perks. There’s also a pool, a recreation center, a playground, and plenty of shade for residents to enjoy.
People tend to stay put in Grant Park for a long time. This adds to the sense of community here. It’s a diverse neighborhood, attracting people of all ages, races, and stripes. You’ll find many examples of Victorian architecture in Grant Park, with some buildings over a century old. There are also apartments and more modern rentals around. The average rent for a two-bedroom apartment in Grant Park is $1,044 a month.
If you’re commuting from Grant Park, King Memorial MARTA Station is the closest. You’re awfully close to Downtown, too. Interstate 20 cuts through the top of the neighborhood. Grant Park is well served by city bus routes.
The Georgia Hill branch of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System is on Georgia Avenue, west of the park. The closest United States Post Office is on Metropolitan Avenue, in East Atlanta. Grant Park is in Atlanta City Council districts 1 and 5. The Grant Park Neighborhood Association oversees local concerns.
