Fayetteville was named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a French nobleman who was instrumental in guiding George Washington to victory during the Revolutionary War. Incorporated in 1821, the city suffered a devastating fire just six years later but bounced back quickly by rebuilding homes and developing a beautiful downtown square. The town remained quiet and quaint through the Civil War and Reconstruction, and saw significant growth when the railroad came into the town. As more businesses planted their roots in the Fayetteville area, the city blossomed into the charming Southern small town that it is today.
Fayetteville Attractions and Special Events
One of the events that the community looks forward to every year is the Summer Concert Series at the Southern Ground Amphitheater. Featuring music from classic country to British Invasion-era rock, this annual music festival helps maintain the historical integrity of the town and gives the community the chance to revitalize the preservation of the downtown district.
