Deerfield was originally settled as Leclair, Illinois, in 1835. The town's name changed in 1850 to commemorate Deerfield, Massachusetts, when new townships were being formed in Lake County. At that time, Deerfield was home to Lyman Wilmot, whose house served as an important stop on the Underground Railroad for slaves fleeing north to Canada. The town was officially incorporated in 1903, leading much of the land to be converted from farms into residential neighborhoods and golf courses.
In 1982, Deerfield was noted for experimenting with a community farm. Two hundred residents applied for plots on the land, and the program was so successful that the town had to open additional community farms to support the requests from the population. Today, Deerfield maintains a strong commitment to health. Local authorities passed a strict anti-smoking ordinance banning smoking in all public places and the surrounding 25 feet, including businesses, bars, restaurants, parks and other venues. The town is home to many Jewish, Asian and Greek residents, making rentals in Deerfield popular with families who want to raise their children in a diverse community.
