In 1873, the town became incorporated and eight years later the population reached 500.

Cultural organizations were formed over time as well, such as Downers Grove Artists Guild in 1941, Downers Grove Concert Association in 1946, Village Forum in 1948 and Oratorio Society in 1958.

Downers Grove is a prime location for students as it is very close to downtown Chicago's many colleges, universities and technical institutes, as well as facilities in neighboring towns. On Thanksgiving, residents and visitors travel from all around to trot through the neighborhoods of Downers Grove for its annual Bonfield Express 5K. It's a great way to start of the food festivities each year.

Other annual events include the Big P.I.G, a basketball competition; Grove Fest, a car show and entertainment event; and the Fine Arts Festival. Residents also enjoy splashing around at North Beach every summer, tucked away on Butterfield Road.
