Originally home to the Potawatomi Native Americans, the village of Lisle is steeped in history and culture. About 25 miles west of downtown Chicago, Lisle's great location makes the Second City easily accessible for a day trip. This quiet suburb is great for people of all ages, and has plenty to offer all residents.
Lisle apartments for rent can be found all over the community. Whether renters need to be close to the train station, nearby highways or great local schools, there are plenty of great Lisle apartments available.
In 1816, the Native Americans negotiated away some of their land, including what would later become Lisle, to the United States government. A plethora of resources made this the perfect area to develop into a booming community. Upon the opening of the Erie Canal, many settlers came to the area.
As the population in the area grew, travelers passed through the community more frequently. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad decided to establish a line through Lisle in 1863, which provided the area with an important link to industry and transportation.
Lisle experienced a breakthrough in technological advances in the first half of the 20th century. Electric lights and gas heating were made available to residents, but because the town was not officially incorporated, it lacked modern amenities such as a sewer system, better roads and a police department. After years of discussion, Lisle was officially incorporated as a village in 1956.
Today, Lisle has a population of 22,539, according to July 2011 data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The community may be small, but the charming atmosphere and appreciation of the past make it the ideal place to call home.
Lisle is home to Benedictine University, one of the prestigious private colleges in the Chicagoland area. The institution was ranked in the top 20 percent of American colleges by Forbes in 2011 and offers students a range of undergraduate majors and graduate programs. The college's multiple sports teams and on-campus activities contribute to the sense of community and school spirit among students.
In addition to serving as the community's main high education institution, Benedictine also functions as one of Lisle's largest employers. Other principal employers in the community include companies such as Platinum Systems, Molex, Computer Associates, McCain Foods and SXC Health Solutions. Plenty of small retail shops and restaurants in the downtown area also function as employers for many Lisle residents.
The U.S. Census Bureau reports that the median gross monthly rent in Lisle is $982. Apartments in Lisle tend to range from about $700 to $1,000 per month, according to the same data.
Some residents may find that Lisle's walkable downtown area and proximity to commuter trains and help offset the cost of living in the community. Plenty of bike trails provide residents with a great way to utilize their bikes and travel the area for free.
One of Lisle's largest attractions is the Morton Arboretum, 1,700 acres of outdoor space for residents to use recreationally. The outdoor space protects some of the area's most beautiful natural landscapes, including wetlands, prairies, meadows and lakes. The Arboretum offers guests a variety of activities to enjoy when they visit. Guests can walk, bike, cross country ski, take classes and even dine at the restaurant overlooking beautiful Meadow Lake. The grounds can be enjoyed at all times of the year, and they are just as beautiful covered in snow as they are in the middle of summer.
Residents can experience historic Lisle by exploring the museums at Lisle Station Park. Visitors can explore old residences, the 1874 train station and even a caboose from the 1880s. During the year, there are seasonal exhibits and special events in the area for visitors to enjoy.
For several decades, Lisle has celebrated its Eyes to the Skies festival. This annual hot air balloon festival is a hit with residents of all ages. In addition to hot air balloon launches, the festival also features live bands, a carnival, a craft fair and lots of food booths.
