The city of Lombard, located 20 miles west of downtown Chicago, is known as the "Lilac Village" of Dupage County. The Village of Lombard actively encourages residents to get to know each other and promotes block parties across town to foster positive and beneficial neighborhood activities. Bicycling is also encouraged in Lombard and the village has constructed two major bikeways that lead through the center of town.
In a community that encourages neighborly activities and environmentally conscious behavior, it's hard not to feel safe and at home in Lombard. With its outdoor public spaces and a small-town community atmosphere, Lombard apartments for rent are in high demand.
Lombard is home to more than 43,400 people, and the Village of Lombard estimates the 2030 population will reach 50,618. Originally called Babcock's Grove, this 10.5-square-mile village grew up from a rich farmland that attracted settlers in the mid-1830s. Lombard was incorporated in 1869, developing alongside the suburb of Glen Ellyn. The Village of Lombard was incorporated by Josiah Lombard, who purchased 227 acres of land in 1868 and was at the head of a group of capitalists responsible for spearheading the incorporation.
Those looking to live amid the town's history can look at the historic downtown area for rentals in Lombard. Within the historic downtown district, residents can find the well-known Lilacia Park, Lombard Historical Museum, Helen M. Plum Memorial Library and the area landmark, the Maple Street Chapel.
The U.S. Census Bureau revealed that the industry in Lombard with the largest share of residents working within is the educational services, healthcare and social assistance, followed by retail trade. The 2010 Census data further revealed that the most common occupations in Lombard, by a significant margin, are management, business, science, and arts occupations. This is followed by sales and office occupations. Eighty-four percent of the employed civilians over the age of 16 are private wage and salary workers.
According to the Village of Lombard, 22nd Street, which is located on the southern border of the village as well as the I-88 East-West Research and Development Corridor, is where many modern office buildings can be found. Among the corporate clients are Mid Con, Unisys, Waste Management and the Hyatt Place hotel. The Village website also revealed that on the northern boundary of Lombard sits a large industrial park with easy access to Interstates 294 and 355.
While Lombard's business district is certainly thriving, rentals in Lombard are excellent options for its student population as well. The Illinois Center for Broadcasting, the National University of Health Sciences and Northern Baptist Theological Seminary are all notable secondary education facilities that can be found here.
According to information collected by the U.S. Census Bureau, apartments for rent in Lombard have a rental vacancy rate of 9.4 percent and a median rent of $1,105. More than 40 percent of renters fall in the gross rent range of $1,000 to $1,499 and roughly 75 percent of renters fall in the broader gross rental range of $750 to $1,499. Nearly 35 percent of all renters spend 35 percent or more of total household income on gross rental costs.
City-Data revealed that in March of 2012, the cost of living in Lombard was assigned a value of 106.1, which is 6.1 percent more than the national average of 100.
One of the biggest Lombard area attractions is Lilacia Park, which draws thousands each year to Lombard's annual Lilac Festival. Lilacia Park was donated to the village in 1927 by resident Colonel William R. Plum. Here visitors and residents can enjoy the 8.5-acre park that hosts roughly 1,100 lilac trees, tulips and other plants. The Lilac Festival is held every May and includes a Lilac Parade and community encouragement to plant lilacs and continue the Village tradition.
Rentals in Lombard are excellent ideas for those looking to take advantage of the roughly 450 other acres of land that makes up the Lombard Park District, too. The Park District maintains top of the line facilities, the Western Acres Golf Course, Sunset Knoll Fitness Center and Paradise Bay Water Park.
