Living in Zion, IL

Zion has a unique history.  According to the Encyclopedia of Chicago, Zion was incorporated in 1902, springing from a dream for a utopian city by John Alexander Dowie. Dowie announced his dream of creating a utopian Christian city on the northeastern edge of Illinois and 5,000 people jumped on board. Zion was named after the mountain on which the city of Jerusalem was built. The city was planned to be a unique haven void of any racial antagonism and operated under fundamentalist morals.

Those considering Zion apartments might be interested to learn that in an effort to make Zion a city free from crime and other vices, Dowie established something called the "Zion City Lease" in the late nineteenth century. The Lease forbade gambling, theatres, circuses, the manufacture and sale of tobacco and alcohol, pork, dancing, swearing, spitting, politicians, doctors, oysters, and shoes in the tan color. These prohibitions do not stand today.

According to the city of Zion website, Zion has a vibrant business community. There are small specialty stores, restaurants and service shops in Zion's downtown business district, and larger stores are peppered throughout the rest of the city. Zion apartments for rent can be a great idea for people bringing new business to the city, as Zion is currently working to attract new retail, commercial and light industrial projects to the area.

While there are few higher education facilities within the city borders, there are a number of nearby colleges and universities for students to take advantage of. Notable schools include the College of Lake County in Grayslake, Shimer College in Waukegan and Trinity College in Bannockburn.
