Michigan City is a fun place to live. The gambling, shopping and beaches make for excitement year-round. The motto of Michigan City is, appropriately, "Shop; Sand; Smiles." When you're in the mood for big city exploration, Chicago is only 50 miles away while South Bend is only 40. Located in the middle of the Midwest, you're just a stone's throw away from everything, making this town a great place to rent an apartment.
Michigan City was founded around 1830 and has steadily grown since. Originally, the city started out as one neighborhood, encompassing about a quarter-mile square. The land was bought for only $200, and people immediately flocked to the town for its beautiful wild flowers and location on the beach.
The activities available in Michigan City are almost endless. The Lighthouse Place Premium Outlets has 120 stores and will appeal to everyone who loves a bargain. The city also houses a zoo and an art center.
The Blue Chip Casino screams luxury and excitement. Located right in the city, about a mile from Lighthouse Place Premium Outlets, the casino offers all-day relaxation. There is a spa and plenty of dining options located directly in the casino.
The pride of Michigan City, however, is the beach. With all of the hustle and bustle of the city, it's nice to just unwind for a day. Washington Park and Beach is located just a few minutes away from the casino and outlet mall. There are plenty of activities available: Swim in Lake Michigan, walk on the pier or play volleyball with some friends. The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is a pristine location if you're looking for a quiet natural setting.
Transportation in the city is plentiful. The local MC Transit connects popular areas in the city. Most people, however, drive themselves, utilizing convenient state highways 12 and 20, along with Interstate-94.
Although there is one high school located in Michigan City, there are no colleges or universities in the neighborhood. However, because the city is in between South Bend and Chicago, plenty of college students rent apartments in the city. Indiana University, the University of Notre Dame and Purdue University are all a short commute away from the city.
The hospitality industry has a strong foothold in the area, and the top employer in the area is Blue Chip Casino. Additional employers near neighborhood properties for rent include Franciscan Alliance, a local hospital, and the Indiana State Prison.
