Living in Newburgh

Native Americans favored the beautiful area since prehistoric times. The location is filled with an abundance of natural resources that include waterways and fertile soil. During the early months of 1803, businessmen Abner Luce and John Sprinkle arrived and obtained land grants. Sprinkle founded a settlement known as Sprinklesburgh while Luce established Newburgh. The communities were but a few blocks apart. By 1841, both settlements merged and became known as Newburgh.

The town soon became renowned as an important river port during the coal mining era. However, the railway bypassed the growing community in favor of Evansville. Newburgh also served as a crucial stop along the now famous Underground Railroad. Today, the township encompasses nearly 1.5 square miles and boasts a population of 3,325. The compact area makes the community easily navigated on foot or by bike.

Venture from your local neighborhood and enjoy local culture. During the summer months, Newburgh hosts Fiddler Fest, the Strawberry Festival and the Wine, Art & Jazz Festival. In June, the local Catholic church presents the Summer Social. Around Halloween, the historic society offers "Ghost Walks" tours that provide the chance to learn more about the heritage of the community in a unique way. Walking participants learn about the township's involvement with the Civil War, mining and slavery abolition. Beginning in December, township residents don period costumes, go caroling and present street performances. Santa visits and trolley tours offer all the opportunity to view the holiday light displays.

If interested in outdoor activities, the river offers the chance to enjoy any number of water-based sports. Rent a boat and enjoy the views or go boating and fishing. The nearby Angel Mounds State Historic Site features miles of cycling and hiking trails. The 100-acre site also has an expansive earthwork mound that archaeologists believe was part of a chiefdom community where Native Americans resided as far back as 1,000 A.D.

While exploring local archaeology, you might also journey to the Ellerbusch Site that lies approximately one mile away. The township additionally features a number of city parks and athletic facilities.
