Since 1990, the population has nearly doubled and today more than 46,300 people call Ankeny home.
The community of Ankeny began as a small farming region founded by John Fletcher Ankeny in April 1875. The active businessman was involved in local politics, and he was a promoter and stockholder of the Minnesota Narrow Gauge Railroad. By 1903, Ankeny was incorporated as a town that spanned one square mile. The community continued to prosper through agricultural opportunities and the opening of John Deere Des Moines Works. By the late 1940s, production included harvesting equipment for corn, cotton, sugar beets, and potatoes. In 1961, Ankeny was officially a city, and by the early 2000s, it spanned more than 26 square miles.
Ankeny SummerFest is a time-honored tradition held the week after the Fourth of July each year. Residents enjoy the grand parade, live music, fireworks, performances, and carnival rides. The DMACC Kite Festival and Ankeny Art in the Park event are additional annual festivals residents look forward to. From watching hundreds of colorful kites fly high above to celebrating the artistic talents of locals, Ankeny events are truly unique. During the summer, the city also hosts Ankeny Unplugged, Summer Sounds, and Movies Under the Stars.
