Overview of Bettendorf

One of the four fantastic towns that make up the metro area known as the Quad Cities lying along the Illinois/Iowa border near the roaring Mississippi River, the city of Bettendorf is one of the most sought-after communities in the Hawkeye State. Many residents enjoy living in Bettendorf apartments for rent because of the city's small-town atmosphere, which makes the Quad Cities one of the fastest-growing areas in the Midwest. According to information from City-Data, the word is out on this charming community, as Bettendorf has seen a 6 percent jump in population from 2000 to 2010. Because of low crime and excellent schools, Family Circle named Bettendorf as one of the country's 10 Best Towns for Families in 2010.

Living in Bettendorf, IA

Bettendorf was part of the original Black Hawk Purchase in 1832, and quickly became a prime location for homesteaders because of its ideal location near the Mississippi River, a main source for steamboat commerce during the time. After many farmers, skilled laborers and small business owners came into the area during the 19th century, the city was eventually named after William and Joseph Bettendorf, a duo who operated one of the city's largest factories, in 1903. Today, the city is every bit as industrious as it was in the past. After the opening of an Alcoa plant in the middle of the 20th century, the city more than doubled its size between 1960 and 1980, and continues to show no signs of slowing down. Still a leader in agribusiness and manufacturing, many businesses are choosing to call Bettendorf home as well. According to information from the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau, the city is home to more than 33,000 residents.
