Overview of Waukee

The charming city of Waukee is located in Dallas County, Iowa, near Des Moines. The small-town atmosphere lends to a perfect environment for families, and the ideal location of Waukee makes it easy to access local and regional amenities throughout the Des Moines metropolitan area. Since 2000, the population has skyrocketed from 2,800 to nearly 14,500 residents today, according to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau. People looking at Waukee apartments for rent will be pleased to find this Midwestern gem.

Living in Waukee, IA

Growth came to the greater Des Moines area after the end of the Civil War in 1865, as people were courted to make the trek to the prosperous land past the Mississippi. After 25 miles of railroad were laid in the area, Major Ragan and General Grant named the town Shirley, but it was quickly changed to Waukee.

Downtown Waukee has long been a source of business and commerce for residents in Waukee apartments and homes. This center provides locals with a place to mingle with others, and serves as a location for seasonal events and farmers' markets. However, because of the town's close proximity to Iowa's largest city, many Waukee residents commute for employment. Top job providers in the area include Wells Fargo, Farm Bureau and Tyson Fresh Foods.  Dallas County was rated by CNN/Money Magazine as the No. 19 county for job growth between 2000 and 2008.

Waukee Attractions and Special Events

Each year residents enjoy Waukee Fest to celebrate the past and future of the community. The event features a parade, local entertainment, breakfast, arts and crafts vendors, and a beverage garden.

Throughout the year, locals get to enjoy the extensive parks and trails of Waukee, including Centennial, Warrior, Ridge Point and Southfork Park. The largest park is Centennial Park, which spans 33 acres and features two sand volleyball courts, a 9-hole disc golf course, creek, three playgrounds and more.
