Emporia, Kan., is the seat of Lyon County located in the eastern region of the state. The city has a population of approximately 24,900, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. It is the ideal location on Interstate 35 in close proximity to Kansas City and Wichita. Emporia is the founding city of Veterans Day and touts other historical happenings. People looking for Emporia apartments to rent will find a close-knit community perfect to raise a family in.
Emporia was founded in 1857 an on upland prairie as a business plan. It received a rush of residents during the free state vs. slave state rivalry, when states were trying to recruit citizens to vote one way or the other for the decision, and the town's commerce flourished. However, it could not grow until it was connected by railroad, which happened in 1869.
Veterans Day was started in Emporia by a man who was grieving over his nephew, who died in World War II. Alvin King wanted a way to remember his relative and everyone else who sacrificed their life in war. He got an Emporia representative to back his idea to change Armistice Day to Veterans Day. The first nationally held Veterans Day was in 1954.
Emporia offers a healthy business community and draws in more than 3,000 commuters everyday. Its top industries include manufacturing, retail trade and educational services.
The city offers a hospital, the Emporia Municipal Airport and two institutes of higher education. Emporia residents enjoy more than 250 acres of parkland that include sports facilities, fishing ponds, an amphitheatre and playgrounds. It is also home to the William Lindsay White Civic Auditorium, which hosts many sports and city events and conventions.
Residents in Emporia apartments for rent enjoy several attractions in the city. The David Traylor Zoo of Emporia hosts many exhibits and educational programs for children of all ages. There's also the 6,600-yard Emporia Municipal Golf Course that will offer good challenges to every golfer.
