Nestled in the banks of the Ohio and Tennessee rivers and full of Southern hospitality, the city of Paducah, Ky., is one of the Bluegrass State's most sought-after communities. With its charming historic downtown, active community spirit and excellent school system, many families are finding their new home in Paducah apartments for rent. With a cost of living index that is 18 points below the national average, according to City-Data, Paducah is also a very affordable place to live, work and play. With all of its fantastic amenities, it is no wonder that the city has won numerous awards, including being named one of America's Promise Alliance and ING's 100 Best Communities for Young People in the country in 2011.
Paducah was settled in 1815 and was originally named Pekin. The area remained peaceful and agricultural for many decades, with both Native Americans and European settlers living in harmony and exchanging goods and services. Eventually the city was chartered right before the Civil War in 1856, after many steamboats and tug boats brought in rapid business growth for the community. Even after a devastating flood and two World War efforts that put the citizens here to the test, Paducah remains a strong and steady mainstay in western Kentucky. Many of its recent improvements and historical preservation efforts have made Paducah one of the largest cities in the state. According to 2010 data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of Paducah has become home to more than 25,000 residents.
One of the best places to visit if you are a new resident in town is the historic downtown district near the roaring Ohio River. Home to many of the city's best gourmet restaurants, this area is also the site of the National Quilt Museum, a wonderful center that showcases the beauty and craftsmanship of a great American art. Other fun attractions in this area include the Paducah Railroad Museum and Paducah's famous murals that line the wall near the the banks of the Ohio River.
