Living in Gonzales, LA
After the historic Louisiana Purchase made by President Thomas Jefferson in 1803, many places that are now called cities today originally started out as parishes, and Gonzales is no different. Nevertheless, it took some time for the city to build up. The area was originally full of French and Spanish squatters. However, once the railway made its way into the neighborhood, the area quickly began to grow into an industrial hub during the 19th century, eventually incorporating as a city in 1906. Today, Gonzales is home to more than 10,000 residents, according to a 2011 estimate from the U.S. Census Bureau. With a growing business community, excellent schools and friendly Southern charm, this quaint town remains a wonderful place to raise a family affordably. Based on information from City-Data, the cost of living index in the area is more than nine points below the nation's average.
