Living in Capitol Heights, MD

When Washington, D.C., was growing at a rapid rate in the early 1900s, a Baltimore entrepreneur seized the opportunity to offer city residents a nearby suburban community. He sold plots of land for as little as $20 a lot, and at such cheap rates, many families moving to the town bought two lots. The promise of an electric railway, a dollar per month payment and no landlords were all parts of the advertising campaign that drew new residents to Capitol Heights.

When community members voted to incorporate in 1910, they added infrastructure and services that had previously been missing from the town. A fire department, public works department and other important city services were developed so the town's 200 residents could have the services they needed.

Capitol Heights remains small today. With a population of just 4,377, residents are members of a close-knit and strong community. Much of the land around the train station has been designated an enterprise zone, encouraging businesses to invest in the town. Capitol Heights residents are dedicated to implementing measures that encourage businesses and the town itself to thrive.

Capitol Heights Work and Study

Capitol Heights is right next to the Washington border, making it easy for students to take advantage of the world-class universities located there. Georgetown University prides itself on being one of the leading research institutions in the world, and strives to provide students with a quality education. Many residents head into the city not just for school, but for work. Because the town is so close to Washington, D.C., it's easy for residents to commute to work. Some of the largest employers in the district include Georgetown University, the George Washington University, Washington Hospital Center, Children's National Medical Center and Howard University.
