Commuters who need to get to Washington, D.C., every day won't find a better city than Suitland. Located just a few miles away from the nation's capital, suburban Suitland provides residents with an easy commute and relaxed, small-town atmosphere.
Professionals aren't the only ones who find Suitland a pleasing place to call home. Start searching for Suitland apartments for rent, and find out what all the excitement is about.
Suitland was named for Col. Samuel Taylor Suit, a businessman who owned a farm in the area. Suit's son sold off most of the farmland in 1892 and opened some businesses that drew more people to the area. A store, bar and bowling alley helped the community begin to grow, and these businesses convinced more residents to build stores, churches and homes.
The area underwent numerous changes over the years, and the federal government bought many properties in the town. People who worked in Washington, D.C., migrated to Suitland because of its ideal location close to the city. Homes and apartment buildings were constructed to accommodate all the new residents.
During the 1940s, the Suitland Parkway was opened in order to connect the Navy's Anacostia Air Station and the Army's Bolling Field to Camp Springs Army Airfield, creating a major military transportation route in Suitland.
Today, Suitland is home to nearly 26,000 residents. This historic town appeals to a diverse range of people, who choose to live in Suitland for its close proximity to business centers and schools.
Attending a university is extremely convenient for Suitland residents. Strayer University has a campus located in the community, which offers students the opportunity to pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees. With a variety of different programs to choose from, it's not hard for individuals to find a course of study that fits their interests and skills. People who want to attend a school in D.C. can apply to Georgetown University, which traces its roots back to 1789, and boasts a law school and medical school in addition to business, nursing and liberal arts programs. Another option is Howard University, a diverse campus that combines extracurricular activities with academics to enhance the learning experience.
Even though some residents find employment in Suitland, many commute to Washington for work. Some of the largest employers in the city include Georgetown University, Washington Hospital Center, Children's National Medical Center, Georgetown University Hospital, American University, Howard University and Fannie Mae.
Apartments in Suitland typically range from about $900 to $1,250 per month. The median gross monthly rent is $1,090, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Some may find the cost of living in Suitland high, but others may be able to justify the cost. The short commute time for those working in Washington may make the higher rent worthwhile.
Even those who head to Washington on a daily basis for work or school will find that the city is worth a recreational trip. There is plenty to do in the city, whether residents visit with kids, friends or families. Visit museums, monuments and memorials throughout the day and experience the country's fascinating history. Aside from being fun experiences, these types of group outings serve as educational trips that everyone will love.
American history is also celebrated in Suitland. The Airmen Memorial Museum collects and documents stories of military members who served the country. Displays on exhibit showcase the individual stories of service members.
