With a 2011 estimated population of more than 17,000 residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, living here gives you all the amenities of a metropolis nearby without the hustle and bustle of city life.

Living in Takoma Park, MD

In 1883, Benjamin Franklin Gilbert received a title to approximately 100 acres near the Maryland-District of Columbia boundary line to develop a suburban community near the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad route. Due to a friend's suggestion, he named the city "Takoma," a Native American translation meaning "near heaven." In just seven short years the city was incorporated due to the city's rapid growth. Many residents began moving into the area because of its high elevation, a rarity in the often lowland environment of Washington, D.C. Today, the city's unique past can be seen in its historic downtown district.

Every fall, the city hosts the Takoma Park Street Festival free of charge to its residents. Complete with live music of all styles, more than 150 artisan craft tables, and food vendors, this charming festival attracts people from all over the Washington, D.C., area.
