Home to the high school whose motto is "Don't talk about it, be about it!", Woodlawn is located in Baltimore County and is just west of Baltimore. The city is also bordered by the Patapsco River, and this provides everyone from apartment renters to homeowners the opportunity to enjoy relaxing days on the shore. Some neighborhoods are located in areas of the community that are known as Security due to the fact the city is home to the Social Security Administration's headquarters. With various parks surrounding the area, it's easy to have fun while still having rent money at the end of the month.
Since the community has not yet been incorporated, Woodlawn shares much of its history with the Baltimore area. This doesn't mean that the area doesn't stand out historically. Founded in 1941, the Woodlawn Volunteer Fire Company came about as a civil defense unit. After the end of World War II, it also began providing ambulance service and fire suppression services. It now stands as one of only 33 volunteer fire departments in all of Baltimore County.
As of the 2010 Census, 37,879 citizens live in homes and apartments around the area. In any given neighborhood, those who own and rent apartments here have access to areas like the Patapsco Valley State Park, Western Hills Community Park. Other nearby attractions include the B&O Railroad Museum and the Baltimore Museum of Art.
There are a variety of transportation options available in just about every neighborhood in the area. Apartment renters who drive will find it easy to commute to Baltimore, thanks to Interstates 695 and 70 intersecting in the community. Anyone who prefers to avoid driving is also in luck since the area is one of Maryland Transit Administration's transportation hubs. There are at least seven routes running through the community.
Home and apartment renters will also find getting a good education easy with the availability of colleges and universities in the area. The FORTIS Institute has a health care campus located in Woodlawn, but those willing to make the short commute can also attend Baltimore City Community College and Coppin State University. The Community College of Baltimore County and University of Maryland are also great options. For those with younger members of the family, Johnnycake Elementary School and Woodlawn High School are also in the area.
There are apartments for rent near a variety of job opportunities in the community. The Federal Government is the major employer in Woodlawn with the Social Security Administration and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services being located in the area. Northrop Grumman, a defense and global aerospace technology firm, is also a major employer in the community as is Lockheed Martin. Both companies provide defense and global aerospace services. On top of these, the company also focuses on other advanced technologies and security.
