Located within the northern region of Boston, Dracut's small-town charm is perfect for anyone interested in living in a community with a rich, historical background. With about 28,500 residents living in the quaint community, Dracut is an excellent choice for individuals seeking solace in nature.
People on the hunt for Dracut apartments for rent can expect lovely town homes, apartments, or houses within a tranquil setting while having the added convenience of living near the Boston metropolitan area.
The small town was originally known as Augumtoocooke and was inhabited by members of the Pennacook Native tribe, who settled there for the abundant game found within the marshes surrounding the region. The legendary Algonquin chief Passaconaway and his family spent most of their time on Dracut's land during the 16th and 17th centuries until settlers took over the lands.
Throughout the next few centuries, the town underwent different ownerships by both a number of native tribes and settlers. The economy relied heavily on fishing and lumber milling, which later led to the implementation of paper making and textile manufacturing facilities.
Despite the modern renovations and housing development that was built, the town's historical charm has remained intact. There are a number of rural spaces preserved within Dracut, including a significant number of the town's historical houses. One of the most well-known homes in the area is the Colburn/Cutter House, which dates back to 1717.
Besides the historical aspect of the town, there are a number of outdoor activities that residents can enjoy in Dracut. One of the most popular attractions in the town is the Lowell-Dracut-Tyngsboro State Forest, which offers 180 acres of bogs, swamps, and ponds along with six miles of hiking, horseback riding, cross country skiing, and bicycling trails. Hunters will enjoy spending the season hunting game within the deeply wooded areas within Dracut.
Each year, the town hosts its annual Dracut Craft Fair in the Colburn/Cutter House, which celebrates the history of New England and showcases some of the most unique artwork of the area's residents. In addition, residents can enjoy the annual Old Home Day, which is known to be the community's largest event. The all-day event includes a number of activities for all types of individuals including an obstacle course for children, a 5K road race and walk, antique shows, music from local artists, and a number of food booths from local vendors.
