Located along Interstate 90 - what locals call the "Mass Pike" - just south of Worcester, the town of Millbury is one of the best places in Massachusetts to call home. The town is easy to get to by car and train, making it a popular place for commuters and families alike. Due to its location near the Blackstone River, and short driving distance to Worcester and Boston, there are plenty of activities for residents, whether they prefer the city or the country. As of 2013, the city is 200 years old, making it one of the oldest small towns in Massachusetts. Another positive attribute of the city is the fact that it was deemed a Green Community by the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources in 2011, showing its commitment to the environment.
With a history of milling along the Blackstone River - hence the name - the town has been a quaint place to live since 1813, when it was separated from the Sutton Parish and became its own community. Although Millbury may have had humble beginnings, it has grown into a town of more than 13,500 residents, according to City-Data. Millbury has grown by more than 6 percent from 2000 to 2010, and the median household income has risen by more than $16,000 during that time, showing that this city is on the rise. The town also enjoys a low unemployment rate, low commute time and a very low crime rate.
Despite its small size, Millbury is home to eight parks and recreational areas, showing its commitment to conservation and the environment. Perhaps the most popular in the area is Colton Road Conservation Area, a more than 53-acre green space that provides a habitat for some of Massachusetts' best wildlife. The Little Dorothy Pond is also a popular park for fishermen, cyclists and hikers.
