Tucked between Cambridge and the Mystic River in the historic and grand city of Boston, Somerville is one of Massachusetts' most sought-after cities. Boasting a diverse population, unique multicultural heritage, and thriving economic base, it is no wonder that so many people are calling Somerville apartments for rent their new home. According to 2010 data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the city is home to more than 75,000 residents, even though Somerville may appear small on the map.
Somerville was largely a wilderness across the Mystic River from Charlestown, so early Massachusetts Bay Colony settlers didn't come into the area until around 1621. As Boston expanded and began to flourish in the years leading up to the American Revolution, the areas around Somerville quickly changed from wilderness into an independent city. After it was incorporated in 1842, Somerville only had slightly more than 1,000 citizens. Because of everything that this great city has to offer, the town has grown into one of the fastest-growing and densely populated areas of Boston. According to City-Data, people who live in Somerville enjoy a high median household income and low unemployment rate, based on 2012 data.
One of the biggest events that is held in the city is the Fluff Festival, sponsored by the Somerville Arts Festival. The sweet marshmallow spread was invented here by Archibald Query in 1917, and the city celebrates this piece of Americana by hosting a wide range of games, plenty of food featuring fluff, and fun activities like roller derby.
Another popular attraction is the Union Square Farmers Market, a great place for residents to get local and seasonal produce in the heart of the city.
