By 1652, the smelting of bog iron became the area's first major industry, taking advantage of the plentiful resources provided by local rivers and swamps. Among famous artifacts created here are the anchors for the U.S.S. Constitution and Monitor ships. The metalworking industry flourished through the 17th and 18th centuries and was later joined by shipbuilding as the major contributors to the local economy.
