Overview of Meridian

Meridian, located in the central part of Mississippi, is the sixth largest city in the state and is full of Southern hospitality. It's known for a focus on arts and culture, and is the home of the Museum of Art as well as the Riley Center Theater and Grand Opera House. The Dentzel Carousel, manufactured in 1896, still offers entertainment for a mere 50 cents a ride. You can also enjoy outdoor activities year-round in the subtropical climate.

After the destruction caused by the Civil War, it entered a "Golden Age" of growth and development that is still evidenced today through its historic districts and neighborhoods.

The current population in Meridian is over 40,000, but the city serves as the hub for a surrounding population of over 232,000. There are two major military bases in proximity. It covers an area of approximately 45 square miles, so you are never very far from attractions and entertainment.

With just a short 10-minute drive, you can visit the Bonita Lakes recreational area for hiking, boating and fishing. Your family can also attend some of the annual events in the city such as the Threefoot Arts Festival and Little Mardi Gras.

You are bound to learn something when you soak up the culture by visiting the museums. Make sure you take plenty of walks around downtown so that you don't miss the historical architecture and beautiful scenery.

Public transportation is available in the local area via the city's transit system, but you may want a personal vehicle to get around areas outside of downtown. Rail travel is also available, with Amtrak and Norfolk Southern providing service to many other cities on the main rail corridor.
