Aberdeen township takes part in the Bayshore Regional Strategic Plan, which is an effort from nine municipalities in northern Monmouth County to reinvigorate the area by focusing on reviving traditional downtown districts and maintaining dense residential neighborhoods, maritime history and the natural beauty of the coastline.
People living in Aberdeen apartments can enjoy a rich history, as the area was originally settled by people who became the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. As early as the year 1000, an agricultural society began to develop and small villages popped up. Dutch settlers arrived in the late 17th century, pushing Native American tribes west. The Dutch made a series of efforts to establish settlements in the area but were unsuccessful with permanent settlement.
The area that became Aberdeen remained part of the Middletown township from 1693 to 1848. In 1848, Middletown was split into two and the western half was made into a new municipality called Raritan township. The townships went through a series of divisions and renamings until November 8, 1977, when the residents of Matawan township voted to rename the area Aberdeen.
Residents and visitors can enjoy more than 14 public parks that make up the township's park system and offer excellent facilities and amenities for recreation. Aberdeen's proximity to the waterfront provides many opportunities for boating, fishing and swimming.
There are a number of historical sites that warrant a visit, including Holmes-Hendrickson House, and Fort Wadsworth. Other notable Aberdeen and nearby attractions include Matawan Art Gallery, Tatum Park and Longstreet Farm.
